The new black AccuType keyboard of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon looks identical, but the mechanics have improved, which is particularly noticeable in direct comparison with the keyboard of the ThinkPad T470. The X1 Carbon keys are always integrated directly into the base unit, while the T470s use an additional frame. This further improves the stability and the area is more elegant. The keys of the previous X1 Carbon 2016 had a slightly more superficial course compared to the T models, but this is no longer the case. From the point of view of quality, we prefer even the keyboard of the new 2017 X1 Carbon, as it provides an even richer and more accurate feedback. The shocking sound is also noticeably duller, leaving a more sophisticated impression. The larger keys such as Back or the space bar are, once again, a little stronger. The concave and adhesive keys have a white background lighting of two levels, which could be a little brighter for our taste. We would also like to see a sensor in the future, which will automatically adjust the luminance according to the environment. The typical design of the ThinkPad can be adjusted slightly. It is possible to exchange Fn and Ctrl, for example. The new ThinkPad X1 Carbon keyboard is, therefore, one of the best in the mobile industry, not just thin laptops. Even complete workstations like the ThinkPad P70 are not equipped with better keyboards.
As usual, you can control the cursor through the touchpad and the red TrackPoint, with three dedicated mouse buttons. These, obviously, also work with the touchpad. Lenovo has also improved this area. There is no more unnecessary band between the dedicated buttons and the touchpad. Lenovo also uses a glass touch panel, which offers excellent sliding capabilities. Similar to all other modern ThinkPads, this is a precision touch panel, which means that entries are processed directly from Windows. We loved the replacement of the mouse and the movements, as well as the gestures (up to four fingers), are executed perfectly. The touch panel is implemented as ClickPad, where you can download the lower half. We get a very consistent and rich click sound on both sides again. The full touch panel is a little lower on the palm rest and, therefore, is easy to find with your fingers. The dedicated buttons of the TrackPoint have been modified and improved slightly because they are very well integrated and do not make noise, unlike the T470. Both buttons also provide similar information and sound clicks. The only drawback of this solution is the relatively small area of the touchpad. We only receive 10 x 5.8 cm thanks to the dedicated buttons. That’s enough, but many competitors simply offer more space.
