In the updated version of X1 Carbon, the Broadwell processors of the predecessor were replaced by the latest Intel Skylake processors, which promise greater performance and longer battery life with the same TDP of 15 watts. You can choose between several models of Core i5-6200U (2.3 – 2.8 GHz) up to Core i7-6600U (2.6 – 3.4 GHz), which we have already examined in the T460. Our test model comes with a Core i7-6500U dual-core processor with a subprocessing with clock speed with a frequency that varies from 2.5 to 3.1 GHz (2 Core Turbo: 3.0 GHz). Caution: Apart from the i5-6300U or the i7-6600U, the i7-6500U is not compatible with vPro, if necessary in your company. As expected, the ThinkPad does not use dedicated graphics solutions, but the integrated HD Graphics 520. As a GT2 level, the Skylake graphics processor has 24 EU (also called shading units or threads) and very little performance. However, it shines with many modern features such as DirectX 12 or H.265 hardware accelerated playback. Depending on the configuration, Lenovo incorporates 4, 8 or 16 GB of LPDDR3-1866 soldered RAM (dual channel), which can not be updated because a DIMM slot is missing. Although Skylake is also compatible with DDR4-2133 technology, the low power consumption of the LDDR3 RAM, also designed for smartphones, has probably been the deciding factor. All models use M.2 SSD as a storage device. Our test model comes with a 256GB model.
Despite the modern 14 nm process, the fastest ULV models of the Skylake generation are limited by their low TDP index. As a result, several models can not fully utilize their Turbo Boost potential under heavy load. Therefore, Lenovo has increased the TDP from 15 to 25 W in the T460, which was not possible in the X1 Carbon, even thinner (probably due to thermal reasons). If it only uses one core, it has no impact and the i7-6500U is constantly synchronized at 3.1 GHz. This changes as soon as a program uses all cores or threads, respectively: Initially, the clock speed is 3.0 GHz, but it falls slightly at 2.8 GHz after approximately 30 minutes of use of Cinebench R15. Therefore, the higher price of the i7 fast models only yields to a certain extent. Buyers worried about the price should choose a Core i5-6200U or i5-6300U better. We could not detect performance differences between the AC operation and the battery during our test. The integrated Samsung PM871 (MZNLN256HCHP) is a mid-range M.2-2280 SSD with 256 GB of TLC-NAND connected to the system through a SATA interface. Our performance tests show sequential storage transfer speeds of just under 500 MB / s read and 300 MB / s write. This is a decent result, although the predecessor of PM851 has only been slower in general. The results of the 4K and 4K-64 tests are also good. If the highest possible transfer rates are important to you, you should consider the optional PCIe SSDs. Lenovo could probably use the same units as the T460 here. Currently, your Samsung SM951a is one of the fastest SSDs on the market.
