The backlit AccuType Chiclet keyboard (28.5 x 11.25 cm) remains virtually unchanged from the previous X1 iterations, with one difference: the keyboard base now fuses with the chassis layer. This means that users will show the entire surface of the surface instead of the keyboard if they wish to access the internal elements. Otherwise, the only noticeable improvement is in the arrow keys, which are now larger, allowing them to breathe closer to the fingerprint reader. This is particularly welcoming, as it is known that laptops less than 15 inches have reduced arrow keys due to the small surface area. The top row of function keys is also spaced, but it is not a major change in the set. The power button and volume keys, which were previously on the right side of the keyboard, are now in their most normal positions, just above the keyboard.
Ergonomically, we do not find any major problems when writing. The return of the flat plastic keys is a bit soft and the depth may seem a bit superficial, but these are common qualities of ultra thin to which users can adapt quickly. Although some users may want to follow the traditional beveled design, the AccuType keyboard is much more spacious with a sharper appearance than the larger hands can appreciate.
Lenovo has generously increased the touch panel surface of 7.5×5.8 cm compared to previous models to 10.0 x 6.25 cm, an appreciable increase of 40%. Now it’s completely flat, with no bumps textured on a series of ThinkPads, including the recently launched X230. Multi-touch and multi-touch gestures are smooth and responsive without noticeable problems and feel much easier to use due to the extra length. On the other hand, the click return seems firm but shallow, and therefore is quieter when pressed. Of course, Lenovo’s signature, TrackPoint, is as functional as it is recognizable to those who prefer it to the touchpad.
The dedicated buttons for the left and right clicks are only average compared to the touch panel, because the performance seems to have gone back one step. The width of the buttons has increased in proportion to the larger touchpad, but the return is relatively deep, silent and fluffy. We discovered that the click was more comfortable in general with the touch panel.
