The Edge E431 comes with a compact and well-designed Lenovo 65W AC adapter. In most cases, it is very similar to the Lenovo adapters of yesteryear, although the connector on its end has now changed (it’s rectangular instead of circular). Therefore, none of your old Lenovo adapters will work on the E431. However, with the change, a proprietary port of OneLink, which is now compatible with a single device: the Lenovo OneLink Dock. This port is connected to the charging port, although, of course, it is still possible to use the charging port independently of it. The main advantage of the Lenovo OneLink Dock is its easy connectivity to compatible laptops, without the performance or video quality that characterizes docking stations that require data compression via a USB connection. The docking station is connected to the E431 through a single connector that provides communication with the docking station and power to the laptop. The ThinkPad Edge E431 includes the now standard ThinkPad AccuType keyboard, which is generally excellent. The movements of the keys are more than enough and the performances are good, while the effort required to invoke a stroke is still minimal. This allows you to write long and high speed. The chiclet-style keyboard design offers significant key spacing, which is large enough to eliminate all common criticism, and even smaller (stacked) arrow keys are fairly easy to use. There is no backlight option available.
The touch panel Synaptics on the E431 is actually one of the most important changes for the laptop. The touch panel of the E430 also had built-in buttons, but still contained separate physical buttons on the touchpad for use with the Trackpoint. From the E431, these buttons are missing, replaced by an extended touch panel surface. What happens with the Trackpoint operation then? The solution is quite intelligent. Instead of having integrated buttons on the bottom of the touchpad, the entire touch panel of the E431 is based on pressure. To differentiate the left and right clicks, the mosaic is divided into left and right regions. If the pad is pressed, the driver takes into account where the finger rested when the pressure was applied downwards, and converts it into the corresponding button. This solution makes sense, but it is not perfect. The biggest disadvantage is the amount of pressure needed to activate a click. On the one hand, it is good that we have not registered any accidental click on the keyboard when using the E431. But at the same time, the pressure required to activate a physical click is considerably greater than with the normal physical buttons or even with the classic keyboard. The other disadvantage is that light touches on the pad make it vibrate, which can be irritating for users familiar with traditional touch pads. On the bright side, the pad has a comfortable, delicate and precise finish. The multi-touch gestures of five fingers are also compatible and, throughout our use of the notebook, we had no problem registering them.
