The IdeaPad 510S-13ISK is a 13.3-inch sub-notebook in the mid-range segment. The performance of the laptop is good thanks to the use of the Core-i processors of the Skylake generation. Our test model costs between 750 and 800 euros (~ 838 to 894 dollars). The cheapest model costs more than 599 euros (about 669 euros). A few months ago, we tested the IdeaPad 500S-13ISK, the predecessor of this test model. In terms of processor performance, there is no difference between the two models because both models are equipped with Skylake processors. The IdeaPad 510S incorporates an Intel Core i5-6200U dual-core processor.

It is a low power ULV processor (TDP: 15W), but with enough performance to meet the daily needs of users. If the Core-i7 models are offered, your investment will not be worth it because the performance will not increase significantly. The processor of our test model has a base clock speed of 2.3 GHz. With Turbo, the processor can reach 2.7 GHz (both cores) 2.8 GHz (single core). The Turbo can be used connected or in battery. The system unit is a traditional 2.5-inch Western Digital unit. It runs at 5,400 rpm and has a storage capacity of 1TB. The hard disk transfer rates are good and match the performance of other hard drives at 5,400 rpm. The Intel HD Graphics 520 graphics chip is compatible with DirectX 12 and can operate up to 950 MHz. Compared to other chips that use DDR3 RAM, the test model shows slightly better results than the 3D Mark performance tests because it uses faster DDR4 RAM. The performance of the graphics could have been improved with the double channel mode, but this is not a realistic option, since the laptop only has one slot for RAM. A built-in decoder of the graphics chip can reduce the workload of the CPU during video processing. The usual formats are supported, including the popular H.264 format and its successor, the H.265. The latter provides smaller files with the same video quality. When playing test videos (4k, 60 fps, H.265), the CPU load remained stable at 10%. In idle mode, the IdeaPad fan is usually disabled. The hard disk makes a slight rasp noise. An SSD exchange would eliminate this problem. Even under load, noise emissions remain within reasonable limits. During our endurance test, the laptop reached 40.3 dB (A), which is acceptable considering that the processor and the graphics processor operate at high speed.
