Lenovo has installed a FHD screen (1920×1080 pixels) in our test model. This is an economical TN panel with significantly lower image quality than IPS screens. The surface of the screen is bright and it seems that this is the only option that Lenovo is willing to offer for IdeaPad. A matte screen or panel with a higher resolution is not available. The brightness of the screen is low compared to most models that exceed 300 euros in 2016. At 188 cd / m2, the maximum brightness is very low. Fortunately, the brightness is correctly distributed on the panel: 95% distribution. We did not notice any back bleeding or PWM blinking.
In this price class, some screens offer better quality. The IdeaPad 510-15IKB is a natural competitor of our test model, with a price of 560 euros (~ $ 591) and equipped with an IPS panel. In general, you should pay more for an IPS panel: see the Dell Inspiron 15-5559 or the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro VN7-572G, which require at least 700 euros (~ $ 739). IPS screens are also relatively brighter, as our comparison shows. Even the Acer Aspire E5-774 has a brighter TN FHD screen. At a minimum, Lenovo has improved the screen of our test model from its predecessor. The measured contrast of 661: 1 is acceptable for a TN panel. Subjectively, the screen is quite pale and black is dark gray. Not calibrated, the panel has a blue tone, characteristic of TN screens. The coverage in the color space is again at the level of a cheap panel: Abyssal. It is unlikely that anyone will use this laptop for the professional editing of images / videos. The combination of bright panel and low light prevents users from using this notebook outdoors. Inside, the screen is barely bright enough to read comfortably. The viewing angles of the TN FHD screen are very standard for a TN panel. At least on the sides, the viewing angles are acceptable. From above or below, the colors are reversed quickly. We believe that an IPS panel would have been a much better option. The touch panel of the test model uses the same metallic-looking plastic as the resting areas of the palms. The device is very soft, which means that the finger slides easily on it. The touchpad is very quick to respond and precise. Unfortunately, it can not compete with the qualities of a Microsoft precision touchpad or a MacBook. Two-finger scrolling works quite well, but scrolling with a single finger can be a bit slow. It is not a ClickPad: Lenovo has integrated a single bar with two separate keys at each end. This is a bad solution, because the user can only press on the far ends of the bar. Also, the click mechanism is not excellent because the clicks are difficult and barely audible. The manufacturer should have used a ClickPad or a touchpad with separate mouse keys.
