A well-built chiclet keyboard is installed in our comment example. The individual keys have a good size of 17 x 17 millimeters and a nice fall. They round the package with a decent shot. It is not too fluffy, which allows you to write quickly. It is obvious that it is currently one of the best entry devices on the market, and its surprising sound also remains within pleasant limits. The surfaces of the keys are soft but always have enough grip. The white letters are clearly legible on each key. The new ThinkPad 13 now offers optional keyboard backlighting that can be set to two brightness levels. Our sample comment shows this backlight that can be added to the order in the manufacturer’s online store. It costs 24 euros more (~ 26 $), which, in our opinion, is definitely a worthwhile investment. The mouse cursor can be moved on the screen with the TrackPoint or ClickPad. Both input options work perfectly. The three dedicated buttons located on the ClickPad of 9 x 5.5 cm are pleasantly quiet when used. On the other hand, the entries through the ClickPad produce a relatively high click noise. The input devices do not impose restrictions and, therefore, Lenovo creates a high quality print like with the keyboard.

Buyers can choose between three different screens. First, a Full HD panel like our example, then a Full HD IPS screen with multi-touch support and the manufacturer uses a TN panel with HD resolution in the cheapest model. The additional 60 euros (~ $ 65) for the FHD screen of our exam sample is a worthwhile investment. All three are announced with 250 cd / m². The measurements of our device are slightly higher than the specifications. With an average brightness of 307 cd / m², Lenovo’s ThinkPad 13 (2017) ranks third. The screens of the Asus ZenBook UX310UA (347 cd / m²) and Dell XPS 13 9360 (325 cd / m²) have a slightly higher brightness. However, the brightness is good and the 89% illumination is correct. Unfortunately, the screen of our exam sample has problems with backlight bleeding. This is particularly visible in the upper left and lower right corners of a completely black screen. However, this did not result in any major restrictions during daily use. The DeltaE 2000 average in gray scale and the color deviations of the sRGB color space were 3.9 and 5.1 at the factory. This is pretty good without calibration, although some peaks appear in blue tones (> 13). Gray levels, in particular, benefit from calibration because their deviation from DeltaE 2000 then drops to a very good 0.6. The color deviation of DeltaE 2000 is, then, only 3.1 after calibration. Although the coverage of the color space has improved slightly compared to its predecessor, the 60% sRGB and 38% AdobeRGB formats are far from being sufficient for (semi) professional photo editing. The screen has an average brightness of 306 cd / m² in battery mode, which means it is not dimmed. This, together with the matte surface of the screen, makes the Lenovo ThinkPad 13 (2017) suitable for outdoor use. However, for comfortable work, we recommend using it in the shade if possible.
