With an Intel Core i7 processor and a large SSD drive now connected via PCIe, our sample comment is one of the best configured ThinkPad 13 (2017) laptops. According to the manufacturer’s data sheet, it is only possible to update the working memory (Lenovo stipulates a maximum of 16 GB of DDR4) and the screen (multi-touch). Our well-configured exam sample provides enough energy to deal with office tasks. However, devices with an Intel Core i5 processor also have sufficient performance to function quickly. All Core i models are better equipped for multitasking applications thanks to Hyperthreading technology. The Intel Core i7-7500U has replaced the Intel Skylake Core i7-6500U and offers approximately 10% more performance with a slightly higher clock speed. The Intel Core i7-7500U is the maximum that can be installed on Lenovo ThinkPad 13 (2017). In terms of performance, the processor potential is well exploited, as is also confirmed by the Cinebench criteria. The three models equipped with the Intel Core i7-7500U processor calculate approximately at the same speed and there is no obvious winner. The difference in performance compared to the commonly installed Intel Core i5-7200U is approximately 10%. The performance of the CPU is not limited in battery mode. The new ThinkPad 13 also does a good job in permanent loading. A slight drop in performance can be seen when the TDP limit (15 watts) settles, but scores with multiple Cinebench R15 loops are constant.
The subjective performance of the system was convincing during the trial period. As expected, the three examples of exams with Intel Core i7-7500U are at the top of the classifications. However, unlike the previous Cinebench benchmarks, the percentage differences are slightly higher among them. The Asus ZenBook UX310UA wins and relegates Lenovo ThinkPad 13 (2017) to second place. For reasons related to the processor, the Dell XPS 13 9360 (Intel Core i5-7200U) and ThinkPad 13 (Intel Core i5-6200U) lines follow one another. The predecessor of Lenovo ThinkPad 13 (2017) had an M.2 interface only connected through SATA III. It’s great that Lenovo has modernized this in the new model. SSDs can now process data at a PCIe speed of 3.0 x 4 (32 Gbps) through the M.2 interface. Toshiba’s 512 GB SSD is 1825 MB / s sequential read and 942 MB / s sequential write. We verify these results with AS SSD. We especially like the 4K reading and writing rates of this model. Many small files can even be loaded and processed quickly, which is very important in practice. The Intel HD Graphics 620 is responsible for the video output and, therefore, replaces the Intel HD Graphics 520 of the predecessor. The integrated graphics card at the maximum speed of 1050 MHz. The power of the graphics unit is sufficient for daily tasks. A second RAM module could recover a bit more performance (double channel). The synthetic reference scores are at the expected level.
