The 17.3-inch ProBook 470 G5, designed for commercial and home users, offers ample power for all common usage scenarios. Our review unit sells for around 900 euros in Europe and is not available in this particular configuration in the United States. Prices on this side of the Atlantic start at just under $ 800. The ProBook is powered by an Intel Core i5-8250U quad-core processor (Kaby Lake-R), which is expected to provide much greater computing power than the most users. As a result, only a minority would benefit from the faster Core i7-8550U, available as an option. Despite its premium price, the i7 offers only a moderate increase in performance.
The ULV processor (15 W TDP) supports hyperthreading with two threads per core and works by default at 1.6 GHz with a turbo boost of 3.4 GHz. The use of Turbo depends to a large extent on the application. For example, in Cinebench R15, the processor maintained its high initial speed of 3.4 GHz in the entire cycle during the test of a single sector (between 1.8 and 3.4 GHz in the battery). However, in the multi-threading test, it only ran briefly between 3.1 and 3.4 GHz and was reduced to 2.6-2.7 GHz after a few seconds. Worse still: on the battery, it has an average of only 1.8 to 2.1 GHz multi-threaded test. For its part, Geekbench was mostly in the peak turbo boost and only occasionally fell to 3-3.2 GHz. The culprit of the differences between performing these performance tests in the sector and the battery is in the BIOS settings of the laptop, where “Enable Turbo Boost in DC” is disabled by default. In other words, turbo boost does not apply to the default battery. Or rather, it should not be applied to the default battery, because despite the initial setup ready to use, the CPU has run at clock speeds higher than its default base clock of 1.6 GHz in our tests. Its activation leads to identical turbo-boost behavior in the sector and the battery, but beware, its effect on battery life is negative. We test the behavior of a laptop under a continuous load by running the Cinebench R15 multi-thread in a 30-minute loop. After scoring more than 600 points in the first race, the ProBook 470 G5 score was reduced to 565-570 in subsequent iterations and remained unchanged for the rest of the 30-minute cycle. The processor ran between 2.6 and 2.7 GHz.
