The Envy 13t HP demonstrates that you do not have to break your piggy bank to get a light notebook with great style and performance. For less than $ 800 ($ 749 at the time of writing), this 2.9-pound ultrabook incorporates the power of an eighth-generation Intel processor, the seduction of a fully metallic chassis and the convenience of a daily autonomy. It also has one of the best keyboards on the market. The more expensive competitors offer more vibrant screens and even more resistance, but the Envy 13t is a fantastic value.
There are so many silver-colored notebooks in our lab that it can be difficult to distinguish them, but the Envy 13 adds original touches that set it apart. The matt aluminum cover has a small slope on the back that covers the hinge, giving it clean and sharp lines. The bright HP logo on the center of the cover actually appears, while the conical shape of the chassis gives the whole system a slim, sexy look. A smooth bottom surface is made of magnesium alloy.
When opening the lid, we discovered an attractive aluminum bridge, with silver keys that match the aesthetic (the MacBook breaks the colors with brown keys). The side edges around the 13.3-inch screen are relatively thin, but nobody could mistake this screen for one of the almost borderless offers of the Dell XPS 13 or the Lenovo Yoga C930. HP also offers the Envy 13t in a “Silk Gold” color.
With its 12 x 8.5 x 0.55 inches, the Envy is thin enough to fit in a narrow pocket of your bag and compact enough to fit even in the tightest backrest tray, while its weight is 2, 93 pounds It allows you to take it very easily. The Dell XPS 13 and the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 are lighter (approximately 2.7 kg), as is the latest MacBook Air (2.75 pounds).
The 13.3-inch, 1080p touch screen of the Envy 13t provides the correct image quality. When I saw Thor’s trailer: Ragnarok, colors like the green in Hela’s cape, purple in a statue and red behind the Marvel logo seemed pretty accurate, but they did not “jump” like in more expensive competitors, like the Dell XPS 13 and the HP Specter 13. HP also offers the Envy 13t with an optional 4K screen, which can be brighter and more dynamic (we have not yet tested it).
According to our colorimeter, the Envy screen reproduced a solid 106% of the sRGB color gamut. The MacBook Air has registered a slight increase of 109% and the XPS 13 even better (130% at 1080p, 117% at 4K). Surface Laptop 2 is in a class of its own with 176%.
The bright surface of the panel, as well as the brightness below average, damage the viewing angles of Envy. Even from just 45 degrees left or right, the colors started to fade and the spotlights in my office were reflected. The screen measured a modest 248 nits in our light meter, which is below the average of 317% of high-end laptops.
The Envy 13t keyboard is so powerful that it makes this notebook a compelling choice for students or productivity workers. The competitors take note; HP has shown that even in a very thin laptop, you can have a world-class writing experience. Although the keys have a modest displacement of 1.2 millimeters (1.5 to 2 mm is typical of conventional laptops), they have a feeling so alive and responsive that I never found myself thoroughly. The keys looked so much like an extension of my fingers that I managed to match my record of 110 words per minute with the impact test of 10FastFingers.com.
The 4.3 x 2.1 inch touchless button panel was very precise, whether you highlight text or browse the desktop. He also responded perfectly to multitouch gestures, such as pinching to zoom in and slide three fingers.
