In recent years, few laptops have received as much attention as the XPS 15, Dell’s flagship product. This 15.6-inch laptop is one of the all-in-one PCs with Windows 10 all in one. But there was a problem. Although the touchscreen of the XPS 15 has a touch screen, it has no support for the pen and even less the ability to act as a tablet. That changes in 2018 with the new XPS 15 2 in 1 (9575). Although the familiar XPS 15 (9570) remains, the new 9575 is for those who want the best of all worlds. Today, we will inform you if there are serious concessions for this first generation Dell product. Dell said it was looking for a small compromise for this 2 in 1 compared to its conventional big brother 9570 and non-transformer.
This is largely true: the 9575 is probably the most powerful 2-in-1 PC, but it also has some disadvantages. For processors, there are two options. Intel i5-8305G or Core i7-8705G processors. The two quad-core processors are part of Intel’s new eighth-generation line, but are now paired with the AMD Radeon RX Vega M GL graphics cards (8 MB cache, up to 4.1 GHz). For this test, we had both i5 and i7 test options. These processors are not the ULV (ultra low voltage) chips found in Ultrabooks, but the more powerful 45 watt types. AMD Radeon is a strange new partnership with Intel, but its addition replaces the standard Intel HD graphics cards for a much more powerful Vega-based system, which gives the 9575 an additional boost. The screen comes in two options: Full HD or 4K: Sharp IGZO (indium zinc oxide and gallium) with a brightness of 400 nits, an anti-reflective coating, a tactile support with a ballpoint pen (Wacom) and ultra-thin infinity edge frames. The 4K option costs $ 400 more than the Full HD panel. For this review, we were able to evaluate both types of screens. The RAM memory starts at 8 GB and can go up to 16 GB, both in DDR4-2400MHz format. The RAM is “integrated”, which unfortunately means that the user can not extend it because it is soldered to the card. With the Core i5 processor, you can only configure the laptop with 8 GB of RAM, including 16 GB for Core i7 models. Port selection is modest with four USB Type-C ports. Two of them are Thunderbolt 3 with PowerShare and the other two are standard USB-C 3.1 with PowerShare. These Thunderbolt 3 ports are PCIe 4x lines that support external GPUs and work with the included 130W AC charger. There is also a microSD card reader and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Sharp IGZO screens are remarkable. The Full HD panel provides 98% sRGB for color accuracy (and 75% for Adobe RGB). The 4K screen is even better with a resolution of 100% sRGB and 97% Adobe RGB. Both panels reach 400 nits and can be extremely bright, especially compared to the latest generation of IGZO displays. Reactivity to touch and pencil is also pleasant. The Wacom AES pen (sold separately) combined with the high performance processor and AMD graphics is a pleasure when using Windows Ink. Dell reinvented the 9575 keyboard by adopting a “magnetic levitation” design (magnetic levitation). Abandoning the rubber cups, this laptop uses powerful magnets to push back the keys, reducing the profile. A good displacement in a computer is at least 1.1 mm, being 1.3 mm for the high end. This keyboard is 0.7 mm, which is extremely short and, in theory, is not very good. Surprisingly, this maglev keyboard is pleasant to use. There are some minor write settings, but this period is measured in hours, not days. The keys are exceptionally uniform and compatible with first-order operation, making it one of the fastest keyboards to write. Easily outperform Apple “butterfly switches” found in the new MacBook Pro. The trackpad is impressive with a large footprint and a smooth glass feel, all with the Microsoft Precision drivers. The performance is a little complicated due to the complexity of the new AMD Radeon RX Vega M GL, which shares the same component as the Intel Core, but in summary, it is excellent. The Core i5-8305G achieved a Geekbench score of 4,597 for the single core and 14,253 for the multi-core. This is equivalent to the highly timed Core i7-8550U found in the Dell XPS 13 (9370).
