The Dell Vostro is a cheap 15-inch laptop for small businesses and covers all the essentials. It is also packaged in a well-designed chassis. You will have to compromise, but we can not find any serious problem. The Dell Vostro series is designed for commercial customers. The 15-inch economic systems cover all the essential elements and focus on productivity. The manufacturer has two different series: the models of the 3000 series start at 239 euros (~ 255 $, without VAT) and use simple boxes with optical units. The models of the 5000 series have a more aesthetically pleasing chassis and are more similar to Ultrabooks (without optical drive).

Our test model is a Vostro 15 5568 with a Core i5 processor, an 8GB DDR4-RAM memory, a 256GB SSD and a matte FHD TN panel. This preconfigured model is priced at 619 euros (approximately 660 USD, excluding VAT) in the Dell online store. The rivals of the Vostro 15 are other professional devices, such as the HP ProBook 450 G4, the Acer TravelMate P259 and the Lenovo ThinkPad E570, also under review. We were very impressed when we saw the Dell Vostro 15 for the first time because its design does not have to hide behind more expensive peripherals. The dark gray chassis is reminiscent of modern Ultrabooks and the notebook looks thinner than it really is due to the slightly wedge-shaped bottom panel. The elegant print continues once you open the lid. The upper part of the base has a subtle pattern. The black keyboard and the polished edge around the touch panel create a pleasant contrast. Dell uses a plastic chassis, although it’s not a surprise considering the price. We still particularly appreciate the stability of the base, which is also supported by the two large support legs at the bottom. There are no squeaking sounds, you can only press hard on the central area of the keyboard, but this is not a problem in practice. The only weak point is the thin cover, which is quite resistant to twisting, but the back pressure will quickly produce undulations on the screen. The central screen hinge is very tight and you need both hands to open the lid, but in return avoid bouncing. The maximum opening angle is sufficient at 135 degrees. Access to the battery is impossible from the outside and there is no maintenance hatch either. You can access the components only when you remove the entire lower panel, but you will find more information later on. The size comparison persists because the Dell Vostro 15 has the smallest size and is also the lightest device here, with 1.9 kg (approximately 4.2 lbs). In particular, the two laptops from Acer and Lenovo weigh about 400 grams more. The entry points of the Dell Vostro 15 are a weak point. The keyboard of the black chiclette has a dedicated numeric keypad, but the movement of the keys and the writing experience remind us of an ultra-flat and economical Ultrabook. There is a bit of rattling and the path of the key is very shallow, which affects comfort. The pressure point is still fairly well defined and the entry is certainly sufficient for daily tasks, but frequent writers should look for another device. Keypad lighting is optional, but unfortunately our test model was not equipped. The Vostro 15 does not offer a TrackPoint, so you can only use the ClickPad for cursor movements. It measures conveniently 10.5 x 8 cm and rests in a slight depression of the palm rest so you can feel the transition easily. The polished surrounding edge is a visual asset. However, the handling of the ClickPad with a slightly rough surface is not convincing. We hear a slight noise when we press it, which slightly affects the quality impression. The movement of the cursor is not a problem, but we often had trouble being stuttered during drag-and-drop actions. The integrated buttons leave a decent impression and are not too strong either. The pad recognizes gestures with up to four fingers and the execution works very well.
