The Dell Precision 5510 mobile workstation from XPS 15 is designed to meet the needs of business users. The main difference lies in the Quadro M1000M from Nvidia, which shows its strengths, especially in engineering software and certified applications. At first glance, the appearance of the Dell Precision 5510 does not fit at all with our usual concept of mobile workstation. Thin, lightweight, compact and yet configured with high performance components, this is Dell’s desktop interpretation, somewhat like a counter-representation of the voluminous image of conventional consumer models.

The successful design of the Dell Precision M3800 has been constantly pursued and improved here. The increasingly efficient components, some reductions and a generally more compact construction favor this development. Our sample analysis is equipped with an Intel Xeon E3-1505M processor, 16GB of RAM, Nvidia Quadro M1000M graphics, a 512GB SSD and a 4K IGZO panel. The price of our test configuration is currently about 3,200 euros gross. The buyer should always bear in mind that the prices shown in Dell’s online store for commercial customers do not include VAT. This is added when the product is in the cart. The case of the Dell Precision 5510 presents an exceptional construction and high quality materials. Aluminum and carbon emit a very pleasant appearance without compromising the sober appearance that is expected in the business sector. While the stability can be described as very good, it does not reach the standard of a Retina MacBook Pro 15 in direct comparison. The screen cover is slightly softer and the base unit also yields a little. However, it is not really decisive. The weight of 2.02 kg (~ 4.4 lb. specific weight) is relatively low and, combined with the small dimensions, it offers good transport conditions. A few millimeters and extra grams are not really important here. However, the difference with standard workstations such as the HP ZBook 15, Lenovo ThinkPad W541 or Toshiba Tecra W50 is decisive. Often they measure one or two centimeters more and one kilogram more. The list of interfaces in the compact housing is not really plentiful. However, only the Thunderbolt 3 interface hides many talents. Essentially it is a reinforced USB 3.0 type C port. Thunderbolt 3, with a transfer speed of 40 GB / s, offers a transfer speed 4 times faster than that of USB 3.1, reaching a maximum of 10 GB / s in its highest expansion stage, generation 2 Power of watts and PCI protocol support, the user has a very powerful data line. These very good requests in general seem to indicate that the home coupling ports installed to date will be gradually replaced by Thunderbolt 3.0 solutions from all manufacturers. In addition to this versatile super-interface, the Precision 5510 also comes with two standard USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and a fast PCIe card reader. The communication configuration is in the normal range and provides the necessary commercial base with Wi-Fi dual band AC, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 720p webcam. A wired network connection can be configured through the included USB Type C Ethernet adapter, which supports Gbit networks. According to the data sheet, it is always delivered with the Precision 5510. The Wi-Fi connections associated with a FritzBox 7490 were correct and always showed two bars at a distance of approximately 15 meters (~ 49 feet, separated by two walls) for inside. The quality and stability of the subjective connection also convinced us in this scenario. The revision example includes a TPM 1.2 module and the Computrace service option (data backup, device tracking / recovery) for different time periods and the usual BIOS and system password options. Dell does not offer a fingerprint or smart card reader for the Precision 5510.
