The Precision 3530 is Dell’s latest entry-level workstation. Powered by an Nvidia Quadro P600 and a new Intel Xeon processor, the Precision 3530 is a powerful machine. However, heat management and fan noise leave much to be desired.
In recent years, there has been renewed interest in the affordability and consumer choice of the mobile workstation market. While workstation-type laptops were among the most expensive machines available (and many still are), it seems that companies are trying to offer cheaper options. Enter Precision 3530. While not necessarily “cheap” by the standards of most laptop users, the initial $ 949 MSRP is a boon to the workstation market. (For a bit of context, most workstations cost between $ 2,000 and $ 3,000 and can work much more).
For less than $ 1,000, users can expect a decent amount of power (Core i5-8300H, Quadro P600), but, generally, at Dell, there are several configurations available. Our review unit now has some of the best specifications that users can choose from: an Intel Xeon E-2176M six-core processor, an Nvidia Quadro P600, 32GB of RAM and a PCIe SSD of 512GB. He raised the price to $ 2650 at the time of writing. Let’s see if the updates are worth the price increase.
Since the Precision 3530 is essentially an update of the Precision 3520 last year, we will not abandon the discussion of size, box and maintenance options. For more details on these factors, see the Precision 3520 review. Below, we have posted some updated motherboard photos.
The 3530 competes well with other entry-level and mid-range workstations, such as the HP ZBook 15 G4, the Lenovo ThinkPad P52 and the old Precision 3520. We will also compare the Lenovo ThinkPad P52 and the Dell Precision 5520 to determine if they are ultrabook style workstations that can follow. We are going to submerge.
Some viewing options are available, from a 1366×768 panel to a FHD touch screen. The BOE screen of our model has a non-touch 1920×1080 screen with a matte finish. The PWM is present, as in the Precision 3520, but it should not be a problem.
The weakest point is the low average brightness of the screen, which is a disappointing change from last year. At 275 nits, the Precision 3530’s display is approximately 16% lower than that of the Precision 3520. In everyday use, this is not a problem, unless the laptop is used outdoors or in direct sunlight. . The backlight is fairly uniform with an 85% distribution. Response times are average and aligned in similar work stations.
The color coverage is good, but the Precision 3530 is an ideal solution for professional use of color. The screen covers almost the entire sRGB range (94%) but can only play 62% of the AdobeRGB range. This coverage is slightly higher than average work stations and should be more than adequate for most users, but photographers, videographers and other users who use large spaces of color should look elsewhere.
The color accuracy is medium. The DeltaE2000 score for colors is 5.84, which is correct. Unfortunately, it does not reach professional level, it is generally considered a DeltaE2000 of 3 or less. The maximum value of DeltaE2000 for colors is 8.76, which indicates a rather narrow window of variance. The reds are a little less accurate than other colors, but not so much as to damage the screen. The calibration returns the color accuracy to 3.14, which should be sufficient for most color jobs.
The Greens tell a similar story with a DeltaE2000 of 6.5. Calibration here helps a lot, which brings the DeltaE2000 score to 1.9 and reduces the RGB balance a bit. The color temperature of the box is fresh at 7176; Sharp-eyed users can choose a light blue tint on a white background. Again, the calibration corrects that and reduces it to 6661, which is much closer to the 6500 ideal. The contrast is medium and is around 922: 1. The blacks are beautiful, but some work, like the HP ZBook 15 G4, offers a better screen
