We looked at the Dell Latitude 5580 not so long ago. Then, the entry-level business device has been tested for the office. Their resistance and good input devices gave us a good impression. However, the TN 768p panel masked the entire device. Therefore, we are pleased to review a different configuration with a Full HD IPS panel and a slightly more powerful Intel Core i5-7300U. The office partner is available for $ 970. If you look at the device on the official Dell website, the price is much higher: $ 1040. As we will focus mainly on the main differences with respect to the version that we have already reviewed, we suggest that you consult the Detailed Review of Dell Latitude 5580 for more information.
As in our last revision, we chose different devices for our field of comparison. In addition to the economical Latitude 5580, we also chose the Lenovo ThinkPad T470. The ThinkPad configuration is almost equivalent to that of our Dell Latitude 5580. However, the Lenovo notebook is equipped with a faster 256GB SSD.During our last review, we were bothered by the low resolution and low brightness of the TN panel. The differences with this model are due to the use of a high quality IPS panel with a higher resolution. The screen comes from BOE and now has a Full HD resolution. However, the poor brightness of the matte screen remains the same. We measured 223.6 cd / m². The Lenovo ThinkPad T470s has a value slightly higher than 264 cd / m².An improvement that will be visible to some users is the reduction of the flicker of the screen (PWM). The higher frequency should not be a problem, even for sensitive people.Another advantage is the low black value of 0.18 cd / m² that produces a deep black. We measure the typical good values of an IPS panel with CalMAN analysis. The DeltaE gap is 5.3 for the colors, which is a bit better than the Lenovo ThinkPad T470 and twice as big as the other configuration of the Latitude 5580.The gray levels have a deviation of 4, which is also much better. Good news: the screen does not have a blue tone, even without calibration. It was a big problem with the TN Latitude panel. The coverage of the color space is low, both for the sRGB color space (60%) and for the AdobeRGB color space (39%).As long as you stay away from direct sunlight and find a shady spot to work outside, the matte screen should work perfectly outdoors. As we are used to this manufacturer, there are different configurations available for each model, adapted to different budgets. Our test unit is the superior model. The Latitude 5580 series is designed to meet the daily needs of professionals and individuals. In our case, this goal is achieved with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. Our model is available for $ 970.The second change in our current Latitude configuration is an Intel Core i5-7300U processor. The difference compared to the Intel Core i5-7200 processor is limited to its higher clock speed. Instead of having to work with a bandwidth of 2500-3100 MHz, our processor reaches 2600-3500 MHz.We wanted to measure the difference in performance using Cinebench R15. The results of multicore tests surprised us: no increase in performance. The previous version and the current version reached 330 points. The reason behind this lies in the clock frequencies: as soon as the Cinebench reference was released, the clock frequency of the processor dropped to 3100 MHz. The Lenovo ThinkPad T470s proves that this is not a usual behavior. He got 370 points in the same test. Then, we wanted to know if this disappointing addition had an impact on the performance of the system. At least, the performances are still the same in battery. The results do not vary even after a series of Cinebench runs.
