The Latitude 5424 Rugged directly replaces the Dell Latitude 14 Rugged, which was Dell’s leading offering for semi-rugged laptops since its launch in the fall of 2014. Dell’s approach to rugged laptops has been conservative, in Focusing in longer life cycles of robust business systems and constant improvement. Although the Latitude 5424 Rugged is a completely new design, Dell’s focus has not changed. The new semi-rough looks much like the previous one, but has been modified and improved in many ways. The following table shows a comparison of some of the main characteristics of the news and the previous ones.
What do we do with this? The new machine is the same size as the previous one. It weighs almost a pound less, thanks to the smaller standard battery and the lighter design. Dell has gone from a fairly large standard battery and an optional long battery to a new model that can accommodate two smaller batteries. This means that the batteries are now hot-swappable and that the combined capacity of the battery is actually a bit larger than that of the previous long-life battery. With both batteries, Dell says the new design can reach 14 hours of battery life or more. While the predecessor of 14 Rugged was already quite powerful with its choice of sixth-generation Intel processors, the machine is more versatile: a sixth-generation “Skylake” chip is still available for those who still want Windows 7. A seventh Core i3 generation represents the low end. And the very powerful quad-core i5 and i7 processors of the eighth generation offer much better performance than the Skylake chips of the previous model. All available processors are very low voltage versions with TDP of only 15 watts and integrated Intel graphics. The discrete AMD Radeon graphics are available as an option. The specifications suggest that all solid-state disk storage options are of the PCIe NVMe type. These are much faster than SATA-based SSDs. Two additional expansion slots (SATA based) allow up to 4 TB of built-in maximum SSD storage! The Latitude 5424 Rugged has a 14-inch screen. The standard resolution is Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels. Full HD was only available as an option in the predecessor Rugged 14 (1366 x 768 pixels). Dell materials suggest a luminance of 1,000 nits, but it is not clear if this is for the standard screen or only for the optional direct-view screen. Dell has also moved from resistive touch technology to capacitive technology (compatible with gloves) on optional displays that can be viewed outdoors. Like the competition in this class, the Latitude 5424 Rugged offers excellent connectivity and scalability. There are three USB 3.0 ports, a USB Type-C port, a native RS232 serial port, a RJ45 gigabit LAN connector, audio input / output, HDMI output and a docking connector, all with protective covers. There is a memory card reader. The ExpressCard / 54 or PC Card slots are available as options. Customers can also obtain VGA ports, optional second serial and LAN ports, or a USB Fischer port. Below is an overview of the left and right sides of the 5424 Rugged, with open ports: The following is a close-up of the back of the Latitude 5424 Rugged with the protective door open. Keep in mind that the laptop’s port covers are not designed to be waterproof, but they fit securely in place and can be easily replaced in case of breakage or wear. Cutting-edge wireless communication is crucial in a mobile computing device, whether in the office, on the road or in the field. Dell covers this with Intel or Qualcomm 802.11ac modules that may also include Bluetooth 4.1. Additional options include mobile broadband through a Qualcomm Snapdragon X20 that can handle the next generation of Cat16 4G / LTE and a dedicated module of u-blox NEO-M8 GPS. Dell also plans to provide assistance soon to FirstNet with access to Band 14, a national communications platform for public safety, as an option available for Dell’s rugged line.
