The name Dell Latitude means high quality business notebooks. Spending more than 1,000 euros (about $ 1166) is not appropriate for everyone, so Dell also produces cheaper laptops, under the Latitude brand, to counteract that. Specifically, it is the Latitude 3000 series, the entry-level Latitude laptop. One of the current display devices is the 14-inch Latitude 3490, whose screen size is currently the most popular in the enterprise market. Our test device is equipped with an Intel Core i5-8250U processor, a 256GB SSD, 8GB of RAM and a Full HD screen. This configuration has a RRP of 830 euros (~ 967 $).
The main competitors to compare the Latitude 3490 are the ThinkPad E480 from Lenovo and the ProBook 440 G5 from HP. These two devices are the cheapest desktop offers from both manufacturers. We will also compare the Latitude 3490 with the Latitude 14 3470. We have not tested the Latitude 3480.The Latitude 3490 is made of plastic, far from the metal and carbon fiber housings we expected with more expensive professional devices. Our tester has an unpainted black finish, which gives it a rustic look. The ThinkPad E480, on the other hand, features a covered palm rest and the ProBook 440 G5, an aluminum bracket, which we both prefer to the Latitude 3490. The case is thicker than the more expensive Latitude 7000., to preserve structural integrity when using materials. The Latitude 3490 is still a 21 mm thick Ultrabook, but its thickness is roughly equivalent to that of an Ultrabook. Dell, however, did a good job of maintaining the stability of cash in a cheaper laptop. We could not press the palm rest or distort the screen immediately when we applied pressure to the back of the screen cover. The screen can be opened 180 °, but you can not open the device with one hand. You can access the internal components by removing the lower housing, which is secured with several screws and plastic hooks. The Latitude 3490 is scalable with two SO-DIMM slots and a 2.5-inch unoccupied drive bay, for which Dell includes the necessary parts to install an additional unit. The Latitude 3490 has a multitude of ports, including VGA, HDMI and USB Type-C with DisplayPort. Unlike the ThinkPad E480, the Latitude 3490 has a full-size SD card reader. Unfortunately, the unit has slow transfer speeds and part of the SD card protrudes from the side of the device. However, Dell could have done better in terms of USB ports. The USB port on the right is too close to the palm rest for our taste. Worse still, it is only compatible with USB 2.0, which is restrictive since there is only another USB Type-A port. The keyboard is one of the most important aspects of a desktop laptop. It is probably the most used input device. Fortunately, the Latitude 3490 comes with an impressive backlit keyboard, whose comfort is second only to ThinkPad keyboards. The Latitude 3490 has a decent pressure point and good line depth. One thing that will take a while to get used to is the width of the keyboard, which is smaller than it could be. There is room for a full width keyboard, but Dell has opted for a narrower design, one of the advantages and disadvantages is a smaller entry key among others. The Latitude 3490 features a precision Windows touch panel that incorporates mouse buttons. This contrasts with Latitude’s more expensive models with dedicated mouse buttons like the Latitude 5490. With Microsoft Precision controllers, the inputs are reproduced accurately and the Latitude 3490 supports touchpad gestures. The touchpad has a slightly tilted plastic surface, which is not ideal for moving your fingers gently over the surface. We would have preferred a glass surface instead of a plastic surface because the glass would be softer. In addition, the Latitude 3490 does not have a TrackPoint, as we have seen in the Latitude 5000 series.
