A good ultraportable notebook needs several key components, which include speed, safety, durability and strength. The 12-inch Dell Latitude 7280 (tested at $ 1,830, starting at $ 1,029) has all the above benefits, thanks to its 7th-generation Intel Core i7 processor and impressive battery. In addition, this lightweight system is designed to survive short falls. While we want the screen to be more colorful, companies looking for a portable and powerful laptop for their employees will love the Latitude 7280. The black magnesium alloy chassis of the Latitude 7280 is slim and indescribable, with a bright white LED on the front edge.
The soft touch paint used on the lid and platform gives the chassis a good feel and makes it easier to grip. Our exam unit included the optional IR Latitude webcam and the fingerprint reader, located on its screen and to the right of the keyboard, respectively. The Latitude 7280 (2.8 pounds, 0.7 inches) is lighter than the Lenovo ThinkPad X260 (3.18 pounds, 0.8 inches) but heavier than the HP EliteBook 1030 G1 (2.6 pounds, 0.6 inches). Dell has placed the Latitude HDMI port, a USB 3.0 port, an optional smart card reader, and an optional Thunderbolt 3 Type-C USB port on the left side of the laptop. The headphone jack, the SD memory card, the headphone jack and the Ethernet port of the laptop are on the right side. Our test unit included a manufacturing problem that we had already seen with other laptops: its bottom was unbalanced, the bottom right corner was not flush when it was on a table. As I placed my dolls on the platform to strike, I noticed that the right corner came down and I touched the table below, repositioning the left corner farthest in the air. When Dell sent us a replacement unit, we found the same problem, but to a lesser extent, we may not have noticed if there was not the first unit. The Dell Latitude 7280 is designed for the long term. The laptop passed 15 MIL-SPEC-810G tests. This means that it can withstand 30-inch drops (in plywood) and large dust peaks, and the system can operate at extremely low and high temperatures (minus 20.2 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit). For $ 35, you can add a trio of security readers (smart card, contactless smart card, fingerprint sensor) to give the laptop several verification methods. However, the fingerprint sensor is not really easy to use because it is embedded in the platform, which makes it difficult to activate the Windows Hello connection. In fact, the system told me that the sensor had to be cleaned, even if my hands were not dirty. Our model features an integrated infrared webcam (an optional upgrade of $ 21 available on the Core i5-7300U and Core i7 drives that Dell marks as configurable) for Windows Hello facial recognition. Once the system was installed, unlocking it was as easy as looking at the webcam. TPM file encryption chips are supplied as standard, but for remote management of Latitude with Intel vPro, you must configure it with a Core i5-7300U or higher. Viewing a trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 on the Latitude, I enjoyed the brightness and the image quality of the screen, but the colors were blah blah. The well-lit 1080p screen of the system allowed me to easily see details, such as the Rocket whiskers, the Baby Groot bark pattern and Drax’s body markings. In terms of color, the screen did not jump, leaving an opaque skin, generally green and vibrant. Our colorimeter readings saved my impressions, the Latitude screen producing 73% of the sRGB spectrum. This is below the EliteBook score (116%) and the average of ultraportable notebooks (98%). The ThinkPad panel (67%) offered even fewer colors. The Latitude emits up to 289 nits (a measure of brightness), which is greater than the EliteBook with 239 nits and the ThinkPad with 184 nits, but slightly below the average of 303 nits of ultraportable laptops. It is bright enough for 45-degree viewing angles to the left or to the right, where it darkens slightly.
