The Kaby Lake processor replaced by the Kaby Lake Refresh processor, that’s basically the meaning of Dell’s latest Inspiron 15. Thanks to its fast SSD, touch screen and backlit keyboard, the convertible is a solid workhorse. Discover in our review if the $ 749 price of Dell is worth it. The latest Dell Inspiron 15 5579 is a 15.6-inch convertible with slight differences from its predecessor (Dell Inspiron 15 5578). Since last year’s model had just been updated to a processor upgrade, we would have preferred a new design, but unfortunately, we were left with the well-established aging chassis. The differences under the hood are quite minimal and are limited to a processor upgrade.

However, given the current generation of processors, the performance of the latter improves considerably. There are two different basic models of the Inspiron 15 5579 available, see the screenshot on the right. Our control unit, equipped with an Intel Core i5-8250U processor, 8GB of DDR4-RAM and a 256GB SSD, will bring you $ 749 plus sales tax. It also came with a 15-inch IPS touch screen. Otherwise, the convertible is also available with an Intel Core i7-8550U processor, twice the RAM and double the storage space for $ 999 plus sales tax. The main competitors of Inspiron are shown in the following table. We also include your predecessor to determine the actual speed of the new model. The only thing we can say about case 5579 is that they are old news. We have already seen it on models 5568 and 5578. It is made entirely of gray plastic. Our particular unit showed some flex in the area around the touchpad, which resulted in accidental clicks when we used the device in our lap. The cover and the base of the screen can be easily deformed and the base is slightly folded in the center. The screen cover had its weakest point around the Dell logo and it bent considerably, which produced a fearsome wave effect on the screen. However, the Inspiron 15 5579 looks like the room, with its bevelled edges and smooth surfaces. The 360-degree hinges were too tight to be handled with one hand, but not enough to prevent oscillation. Since the laptop does not yet have a dedicated maintenance panel, you must remove the entire lower shell to gain access to the internal hardware. With a footprint of 38.1 x 25.3 cm, the 5579 was by far the largest unit in our test group. However, one should also bear in mind that the Acer Spin 3 and Lenovo ThinkPad L380 computers are 14 and 13.3 inch laptops, respectively. The scale was stopped at 2.1 kg (4.6 lb) for the laptop and 269 g (9.5 oz) for the charger. In terms of connectivity, the 5579 proved to be quite vanilla. Specifically, one of its three USB ports uses only the USB 2.0 speed. In addition, you will only find an HDMI port and an SD card reader. USB-C or DisplayPort are not yet visible. At least, the ports are distributed more or less uniformly on both sides, located towards the rear of the apparatus, and are widely spaced. The Dell Inspiron 15 5579 SD card reader is compatible with all current formats. Our performance tests showed that it was connected to the USB 2.0 interface of the chipset and, therefore, was not faster than its predecessor. The tests were performed using our Toshiba Exceria Pro SDXC UHS-II 64 GB reference card. Wireless communication is managed by a Qualcomm Wi-Fi modem that supports 2×2 802.11 ac and Bluetooth 4.1. The 5579 performed very well in our Wi-Fi tests under ideal conditions, like most of its competitors. We were able to determine the maximum RX and TX rates of 657 and 612 Mbps, respectively. Wi-Fi performance has been dramatically improved. Dell’s convertible solution does not support other ways to connect to networks. A USB key is required for connection through an Ethernet cable because the device does not have a standard RJ45 Ethernet port. The 5579 is not equipped with an LTE modem and, unfortunately, it can not be installed retroactively either.
