A powerful processor, an IPS screen and a fast SSD: these are the basic elements of a good desktop computer, and Inspiron provides them to everyone. A backlit keyboard and good battery life rest on this base, and the integrated touch screen can be used with a stylus. The full package costs a little less than 800 euros (~ $ 850). The Dell Inspiron 15 5578-1777 is a 15.6-inch convertible laptop. This is the related model of the identical Inspiron 15 5568 model that we recently reviewed. One of the differences between the devices lies in their processors: while the 5578-1777 is equipped with a Kaby Lake processor, the sister model incorporates a Skylake processor.
The Inspiron contest includes laptops such as the HP Pavilion x360 15 and the Lenovo Yoga 510-15ISK. Because the two Inspiron models we examine are structurally identical, we will not cover the case, the connectivity options, the input devices or the speakers in this article. See our review of Inspiron 15 5568 for more information on these topics. The 15.6-inch touchscreen of the Inspiron has a native resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. The screen offers a good contrast ratio (976: 1). The brightness, on the other hand, is too low (242.3 cd / m²). A convertible laptop in this price range must provide at least 300 cd / m² of luminance. On a positive note, we have never seen a backlight brightness of PWM on this screen. By default, the color difference of the DeltaE 2000 screen is 4.94, which is not bad. Manufacturers should strive for a difference of less than 3. The screen does not suffer from a blue tone. Dell Inspiron offers an IPS panel with stable viewing angles, allowing the user to see the contents of the screen from any angle. Unfortunately, the convertible laptop can not be used outdoors: the reflective surface of the screen combined with the low brightness of the panel is prohibitive. Dell’s Inspiron is a 15.6-inch convertible laptop. The Kaby Lake processor has enough performance to support all common applications. Our test device costs around 800 euros (about 850 euros, gross price). At the time of publication of this revision, we could only find one version of this device, equipped with a Core i7 processor, more memory and a larger SSD. The Dell Convertible laptop is equipped with a Core i5-7200U dual-core processor (Kaby Lake). This is the mid-range ULV processor currently used by Intel (TDP: 15 watts). It must have enough performance to meet the demands of the majority of users. In addition, Dell also offers a version of the Inspiron with a slightly more powerful processor, the Core i7-7500U. For most users, the slight gain in performance was not worth the much higher cost. The Core i5 processor in our model works at a base clock speed of 2.5 GHz. Using the turbo, it is possible to reach speeds of up to 3.1 GHz (both cores). The processor takes advantage of its turbo in AC power mode and battery mode. The combination of a solid state solid state drive and a powerful processor creates a fast system. Inspiron’s good score at the PC Mark benchmark shows solid overall performance. The computer also performed well when we used more demanding applications than simple desktop and Internet programs. A small improvement in the overall performance of the device would be possible if the user installed a second RAM module. The active dual-channel mode would therefore increase the graphic performance of the system. A SanDisk SSD is used as a system storage device for the computer. The SSD is a 2.5-inch model with a total capacity of 256 GB; Around 200 GB are available to the user. The remaining space on the disk is occupied by the Windows installation and the recovery partition. Reader transfer rates are good. The Inspiron is not equipped with a dedicated GPU; Instead, Dell has installed the Intel HD Graphics 620 integrated graphics solution. This card supports DirectX 12 and operates at speeds up to 1000 MHz. The results of the 3D Mark 2011 benchmark are normal for this GPU. Installing a second RAM module would increase system performance by enabling dual channel mode.
