Shortly after Intel announced the first of its eighth generation main processors in August, AMD introduced its new Ryzen Mobile series. With the increase in the number of key people in several product lines, we see a significant improvement in performance over last year’s laptops. The domain of Intel in this space is disputed for the first time in years. With only four models on the market today, these new processors are based on AMD’s ‘Zen’ processor cores and incorporate integrated graphics based on the recently launched Vega architecture. The new eighth-generation processors from Intel have proven to be very computationally efficient, but integrated graphics have never been an important asset for the company, especially in the gaming industry.
This is the main area in which AMD expects to obtain the advantage. Some laptops on the market already have AMD processors, and we’ll see one today from the recently launched Dell Inspiron 15 5575 Series. This series is currently available with the Ryzen 3 and Ryzen 5 processors and offers a variety of options in terms of color, screen resolution and RAM. Our exam unit is today one of the best SKUs in the series, according to the Dell India website. It has an AMD Ryzen 5 processor and its price is Rs. 50,690. Let’s see if AMD technology has the potential to challenge the Intel bastion. The Inspiron 15 5575 is a nice laptop with a basic look. Dell gave a plastic finish to the plastic parts, but once it was held, it is easy to know that it is not real aluminum. However, the quality of construction is quite solid and the body of the laptop does not flex easily, even if pressure is exerted. It seems that it will be durable enough for long-term use. On its website, Dell presents a multitude of different colors for the 5575, but at the time of this review, our particular variant was only for sale in a black licorice ornament. The unit of money we receive does not look bad, but it looks a bit bland. The cover provides good protection for the 15.6-inch LCD screen. The resolution is very high in 1920×1080, and the edges of the text and the icons do not seem too irregular. There is also an antireflective coating, which prevents glare. However, the panel used here is clearly not IPS quality and, therefore, the viewing angles are poor and the colors are off. The brightness is enough, but at full brightness, whites tend to come out easily when they are not seen from the front. You also get an old-fashioned thick bezel around the screen and an HD webcam in the usual location. You get a hinge in the center of the screen, which also hides all the ventilation holes. This notebook is quite thick and, even with the lid open, its base is 22.7 mm thick. To give it an illusion of thinness, Dell has thinned slightly the sides and front of the laptop. The connectivity is good and includes two USB 3.0 ports and a USB 2.0, HDMI, Ethernet, an SD card slot, a combined connector for microphone and headphones and a DVD recorder, something we have not seen in a long time. Only one LED near the power outlet will light up white when plugged in and orange when the battery is low. What is missing here is a USB Type-C port. The palm rest and the touchpad are large enough and Dell has managed to integrate a full keyboard with a keyboard. The chiclet keys are well spaced but not backlit and the tactile response was not very good either. They are also quite noisy. The arrow keys are well separated from the others and the power button is isolated on the keyboard to avoid accidental pressures. However, there is no fingerprint sensor even with this high-end configuration. The surface of the trackpad is not the softest. We found that the follow-up was sometimes a little nervous and that the actions did not always work perfectly. At the bottom, it has four rubber feet to help you get a free space. The stereo speakers are also placed at the bottom, towards the front. There is no hatch to access the components and the battery is not removable either. In general, the Inspiron 15 5575 is not a thing to look at. It is built to be utilitarian, and that seems to be the end. This laptop is not very light, with 2.5 kg, so it will not be very pleasant to wear it every day.
