Since the launch of the Inspiron 15 7000 2015, Dell has been very active in the discount games market. Every year has seen the launch of a new Inspiron 15, each slightly higher than the previous. However, mid 2018 brought a significant change; Dell has avoided the Inspiron brand for its discount game offerings, by renaming them “G”. Although the name has changed, Dell’s goal remains the same. With the G7, the company aims to offer a powerful package at the best price.
We recently saw the other Dell game offerings, the G3 and the G5. Today we have the top model: the G7. The 15-inch gaming notebook is the spiritual successor of the Dell Inspiron 15 7577. Some notable improvements set it apart. On the one hand, the G7 now incorporates the latest Intel® Coffee Lake processors (up to a Core i9). The Nvidia GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU also performs the jump. However, the price is $ 100 cheaper than the Inspiron 15. Our model now has an Intel Core i7-8750H and GTX 1060 Max-Q (as well as some other subtleties) and sells for 1100 USD.
The budget segment of the gaming notebook market has recently been flooded with exceptionally powerful hardware. As such, there is no shortage of competitors. We will see how the old model Dell Inspiron 15 7000 7577 compares with the G7. We will also see Acer Helios 300, Asus FX503VM, HP Omen 15t and Lenovo Legion Y520 15IKBN (7700HQ, FHD, GTX 1050 Ti). Let’s see which is the laptop that most deserves your hard earned money.
Like Dell’s mid-range laptops, the G7 is almost completely wrapped in plastic. The G7 retains much of the design of the Inspiron 15 7000 7577, retaining the same sharp front and rear faces with the heat fins facing back to provide a subtle color accent. Dell offers a combination of standard colors in black and gray, in addition to the blue and white model we have today. The combination of blue and white is, in our opinion, quite striking and allows the device to stand out from the other budget options. The satin finish gives the case a pleasant appearance and is very resistant to fingerprints and smudges.
Despite its plastic construction, the housing is rigid and firm. The lower panel and the magnesium keyboard keyboard have almost no direct pressure. The holes and seams are uniform and tight. There is a slight crunch when the right edge of the machine is compressed. The lid is the weakest point. It can twist and flex inward without much effort. The frame of the screen is aligned with the panel, which was not the case with the old Inspiron 7577. The hinge is well adjusted and keeps the screen motionless while writing. Opening with one hand is easy and the screen can be opened at about 135 degrees. In general, the G7 is well built, just like its big brother. Considering that the quality of the construction is the first thing that must be done with other laptops for games at a reduced price, the resistant helmet is welcome.
The excellent quality of construction is at the expense of weight and size. The G7 is almost as big as other low-cost gaming devices, but the Lenovo Legion Y530, the Asus FX503VM and the Dell G3 have a smaller size. Although not the most portable, the G7 will fit in most backpacks. Users looking for a more compact laptop should look for better options from Lenovo or Asus.
The design of the ports is an exceptional feature. The star of the series is the Thunderbolt 3 compatible with USB Type-C, something that is omitted at this price. The remaining ports are well positioned and offer a lot of space, and the choice is varied. All bases are covered: three USB ports, two screen outputs (DisplayPort via Thunderbolt 3) and Ethernet are available. There are not many more users that want.
