The keyboard of the FX705 is based on the Scar edition of the more expensive GL504. This includes not only the design (with, for example, isolated arrow keys), but also the special WASD keys, which are intended primarily for shooting fans. The writing experience is between soft and difficult and reminds us mainly of MSI keyboards. The entries in the laptops of the GE and GS series are very similar. The FX705 must award points in terms of lighting. The 17-inch laptop is equipped with RGB lighting, but lacks some intensity and regularity (the F10 key was extremely dimly lit), even in the highest setting.
As for the mouse substitute, Asus has followed the current trend and installed a dedicated keyless ClickPad on the FX705. The fingers slide comfortably on the touch pad (provided they are dry and not greasy) due to the smooth surface. The touchpad is also useful for compatible gestures, which can be used to zoom quickly and scroll through web pages and documents. We were less satisfied with its accuracy, which could be a bit better. After all, the input devices still work well, even if they are not at the very top of the list. While other low budget gaming laptops offer only a 60 Hz display, the configuration of the FX705 we tested is equipped with a 144 Hz panel. AU Optronics B173HAN04.0 (AUO409D) response time is impressive 7.4 ms gray to gray and 10 ms of black to white are very good values for the notebook segment, although the MSI GS73 and internal competition Asus GL703 also have short switching times. Perfect: to improve color fidelity and color accuracy, Asus has pre-calibrated the panel. While this step improves the quality of the output image of the box, the compensation is a massively reduced brightness. A little below 230 cd / m² is a very low value that is not suitable for outdoor use, which is clear from the images below and is further exacerbated in battery mode, where the brightness is even lower. The contrast ratio does not justify criticism. The FX705 easily surpasses the 1000: 1 mark, which is not a fact. The coverage of the color space can be considered as a superior average. With 89% of sRGB and 58% of AdobeRGB, it is slightly ahead of the Schenker XMG A707 and the Acer Predator Helios 300, but behind the Asus Strix GL703GM and the MSI GS73 8RF, which cover 100% of the color space sRGB. Users concerned about bleeding from the screen can breathe easily: our test device did not show a halo, despite a rather poor lighting (85%). As usual on IPS screens, the viewing angles were good.
