Little has changed with the new version of the 17-inch gaming notebook. The design of the Alienware 17 R3 is similar to that of the AW 17 R2. Only the DisplayPort port on the back has been removed and replaced with a USB 3.1 port that supports Thunderbolt 3 on the right. The changes under the hood are also minimal. The manufacturer now uses DDR4 instead of DDR3-RAM and PCI / NVMe-SSD for an additional fee. Due to the close relationship with the previous model, we are giving up case evaluation, connectivity, input devices and speakers. The corresponding information is available here.
As usual, you can configure the Alienware laptops completely on the home page. Not all basic models can be equipped with each component, but we still consider that the selection is good. Depending on the budget, the AW 17 R3 is equipped with a matte Full IPS IPS panel of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels or a high resolution 4K screen with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. The memory starts with 8 GB, up to 32 GB. Small drawback: two memory slots are not very generous for a gaming laptop and we would have liked to see four.
One M.2 slot for SSD and one 2.5-inch slot for hard drives are standard. The processor is based on the Intel Skylake generation and has the designation Core i7-6700HQ or Core i7-6820HK. Alienware offers high-end graphics cards GTX 970M and GTX 980M. The guarantee is especially generous: up to four years, including home delivery, are quite unusual. Dell will also install Windows 8.1 instead of Windows 10 (Home or Pro) if desired.
The Alienware 17 R3 starts at 1,799 euros (~ 1978). Our examination unit with the designation A17-9935, provided by the cyberport.de online store, costs around 2,000 euros (about 2,000 euros). For this price, you get a Full HD panel, a Core i7-6700HQ, a GeForce GTX 980M, 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive.
Although the 17-inch device uses the same Full HD panel as its predecessor (173WF4 / LGD0459), there may be slight variations due to production and measurement tolerances.
With an average screen brightness of 336 cd / m², the Alienware 17 R3 does not have to hide behind the competition. A contrast ratio of almost 820: 1 and a brightness distribution of 90% are also not bad, although our test unit has had retroillumination margins on the horizontal edges and the black value of 0.44 cd / m² could also be a little smaller .
The third review also leaves a good impression on extended tests with professional CalMAN software. The DeltaE-2000 values of 3.69 (grayscale) and 4.76 (ColorChecker) are typical of an IPS screen. The results can be improved to 0.79 and 3.28 and you can eliminate the light yellow source with a calibration.
We open the Performance section with some screenshots, which show the system components and the most important functions of the software.
Although the Core i7-6820HK is faster and has a free multiplier (Alienware overclock at 4.1 GHz), we still believe that the Core i7-6700HQ is a reasonable choice.
In addition to hyperthreading, the Skylake model also supports automatic overclocking via Turbo Boost, which can increase the clock under load from 2.6 to 3.1 GHz (four cores), 3.3 GHz (two cores) or 3.5 GHz (one heart). The maximum values have always been maintained in the tests with Cinebench R15 and the reference point Unigine Heaven 4.0.
The results of the CPU performance tests confirm the good first impression. The Core i7-6820HK, which is much more expensive, is not even 10% faster than many other laptops. If the difference is greater, this is due to the additional overclocking of the CPU (compare the MSI GT72S-6QE or the Asus GX700). Laptops equipped with desktop chips such as the Schenker XMG U716 can also be faster than 10%. The practice is similar for both devices, especially because the graphics processor is often the limiting factor in games.
