Dell announced the current Alienware 15 at CES in Las Vegas earlier this year and we had already tested the 15-inch gaming laptop with an Nvidia GTX 970M soon after. The first update with the AMD Radeon M295X graphics card continued in June, but the GPU could not convince us. The changes in our new evaluation sample are not limited to the GPU; The unit also receives a new processor and DDR4 RAM for the first time.
Our test configuration with a Core i7-6700HQ, a GeForce GTX 980M, a 16GB DDR4 RAM, a 256GB NVMe SSD hard drive + a 1TB hard drive and a matte FHD-IPS panel is currently offered at the price of 2,300 Euros (~ 2475 USD). It will be interesting to see if Alienware can handle the powerful components and how the new Skylake processor behaves compared to Haswell’s previous model.
The rivals of the Alienware 15 are other powerful 15-inch laptops, such as the two devices Schenker XMG U506 and XMG P506, as well as the Aorus X5. Obviously, we compared the results with the two previous configurations of the AW 15 and we also observed the MSI GT72S 6QE of 17 inches. The latter is equipped with a Core i7-6820HK, also available for Alienware 15.
There is no major change from the previous revisions with respect to business devices, connectivity and entry. We will not cover these sections in this update. The corresponding information is available in the two previous articles (AW 15 GTX 970M / AW15 Radeon M295X).
There is a small update in the port equipment, especially due to the new chipset. The Mini-DisplayPort on the back has been removed and only has three USB 3.0 ports instead of four. However, you recover a modern USB-C 3.1 (10 Gbps) port with Thunderbolt support. Therefore, it is possible to use DVI or VGA screens through the corresponding adapters, for example.
The network modules have also been updated. The Killer e2400 Gigabit adapter and the Killer Wireless-AC 1535 are the latest models. The maximum transfer speed of the Wi-Fi module is 867 Mbps and we were able to manage about 500 Mbps in an alternative network (Asus RT-AC56U router) and still about 100 Mbps to 802.11n. These are very good results and the subjective impression of signal strength is also very good. Compared to the predecessor, the Wireless-AC 1525, the new model also supports Bluetooth 4.1.
Alienware equips the 15-inch gaming laptop with a default FHD-IPS matte panel. A 4K-IPS-IGZO screen is available for an additional cost of 380 euros, approximately $ 409 (regardless of the base price). The panel of our analysis unit is provided by Samsung and carries the designation 4NDDJ_156HL. A first panel with a similar designation (FYTXT_156HL) was used. Alienware, however, announces only a luminance of 220 nits on its website, which would be much smaller than the previous model (~ 300 nits).
Our measurements show that the situation is even worse, because the average brightness is only 180 nits. This means that there can even be problems in clear indoor environments. At least, the value of black can take advantage of the low luminance of 0.19 cd / m², so the contrast ratio is still very good in 950: 1. Subjectively, the colors can be a little richer, but there is no other problem Apparent apart from the low light. You may want to upgrade the 4K panel to a reported luminance of 300 nits if you do not want to use the laptop only in dark basements. The Full HD panel is quite disappointing if we consider the high price. We also find pulse width modulation (PWM) at a brightness level between 0 and 25%. As a result, some users may notice an annoying flicker.
The additional analysis using a spectrophotometer and the CalMAN software reveals more inaccuracies compared to previous evaluations of AW 15. DeltaE deviations in the factory are 6.74 (ColorChecker) and 6.44 (grayscale), respectively. ). The blue tones, in particular, show high deviations of up to 14; The color temperature (6465 K) and a gamma value of 2.29 are acceptable. With a color space coverage of only 60% sRGB and 38% AdobeRGB, Alienware 15 is clearly behind its competitors.
