Although small laptops are increasingly portable, the choice of models less than 15 inches is limited, at least when looking for a laptop for powerful games. Our mobile top 10 (in February), the MSI GS43VR 6RE and the Razer blade model 2016, have only two 14-inch laptops. Alienware or its parent company, Dell, now uses the mobile gaming system concept and takes it to the next level with Alienware 13 R3, the third version of the 13-inch gaming notebook.
The technology has evolved considerably compared to the predecessor we revised in mid-2015. The chassis no longer uses an efficient ULV processor with a TDP of 15 watts, but a traditional quad-core Intel Kaby Lake generation with a consumption of energy much greater than 45 watts (Core i7-7700HQ or Core i5-7300HQ). The graphic performance has also improved. Instead of the Maxwell GeForce GTX 960M chip, graphics are now managed by a new Pascal chip. Depending on the SKU, you can choose between GeForce GTX 1050 (GDDR5 2GB), GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4GB GDDR5) or GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB GDDR5) in combination with 8 to 32GB of DDR4 RAM. Games and other files can be stored on an SSD with a capacity between 180 and 1000 GB (SATA-III or PCIe / NVMe). A secondary storage device is also possible.
The highlight is the high resolution QHD screen based on OLED technology, although it is a bright panel due to its tactile functionality. The less expensive models are equipped “only” with a Full HD IPS or HD TN panel. You can also create your own computer on the Dell website and configure details such as the operating system (Windows 10 Home vs. Pro), the keyboard layout (German or English) or the Wi-Fi (Killer) module. 1435 vs. 1535). We will cover different options for the software and the warranty later. The entry-level model starts from 1479 euros (about 1572 dollars); Our test model is the high-end version, which costs 2179 euros (about 2316 dollars).
Alienware follows its own design philosophy in a fairly consistent manner. The 13-inch system is like the older siblings of 15 and 17 inches. This has many advantages but also disadvantages. As with the Alienware 15 R3, the chassis is very thin (2.2 to 2.4 cm), but the footprint is much larger than that expected from a 13-inch notebook due to the extreme depth (in this case). Box of 27 cm). The lid moves a few centimeters (see photos) to improve the cooling of high-end components. In our opinion, “the rear part that is projected” does not really coincide with the rest of the design, which is excellent for most (although it is obviously a matter of taste).
There is not much to criticize in terms of quality. Alienware reuses a combination of metal (top, bottom) and plastic with a soft touch finish in the palm rest area. The latter is very pleasant to the touch, but, as is usual with rubber surfaces, it tends to attract dirt. The most sensitive parts are the bright glasses (OLED version).
One of the best aspects of the Alienware 13 R3 is its excellent stability. It does not matter if you press the cover or the base, you can hardly deform or crush the chassis, even with great force. The quality is superior to that of most competitors, as is the case of lighting elements. In addition to the Alienware logo below the screen and the two alien heads (hood, power supply), the keyboard and the touchpad are also illuminated.
The Alienware 13 R3 is only average in terms of weight. 2.5 kg (approximately 5.5 pounds) is not much for a gaming laptop, but there are more and more portable competitors. The Schenker XMG P406 weighs only 2.2 kg and the Razer blade almost exactly 2.0 kg. The MSI GS43VR and Aorus X3 Plus v5 models are even lighter, with 1.9 and 1.8 kg (~ 4.2 and 4 lb) respectively.
